K2 can be found at an altitude of 5,117 m or 16,785 ft in the northwestern Karakoram Range in Pakistan, partly in the Kashmir Region. As is the case for many high peaks, for K2 there are different names. Consequently, K2 is known as Qogir Feng in Chinese, and they name the mountains Dapsang or Chogori locally. Also, the English name for the mountain is Mount Godwin-Austen, after Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen a British topographer who surveyed the area around K2 in the late 19th Century.
La in Balti means a mountain pass, a ridge, or a low point between two mountains that allows a relatively lower point of access.
